Things To Know
How long is the fishing trip?
Fish are not always concentrated in one place on Kauai. That’s why our captains recommend a full 8-hour day charter off Kauai’s shores. This way, with high speed trolling, you cover more area in less time, which allows you to fish for all kinds of fish like tuna, mahi mahi, and wahoo. And, it can also trigger an aggressive response from a trophy marlin should a hungry one be in the area. Half-day, 4-hour charters are also available.
Should I take a private or shared fishing charter?
Private Charter: You and your party charter the LAHELA sport fishing boat for your own pleasure. No additional anglers or strangers are on board with you. This is the preferred way to fish on Kauai as you are assured that any fish that hooks up is yours to reel in. Click here for private charter rates.
Shared Charters: You share your fishing day with other anglers on board the LAHELA. Each angler is assigned 1 rod for the day. Rods are rotated equally among each of you, switching at 2, 3, and 4-hour intervals depending on the length of your Kauai fishing trip. Click here for shared charter rates.
What’s your catch policy?
Lahela Ocean Adventures will tag and release billfish upon request. We can arrange to have your trophy catch mounted and shipped to you. See next question for more details.
Can I take my fish home?
Yes. We can make arrangements for you to have your fish processed and stored for the balance of your trip and then shipped to your final destination or packaged for you to take home on your return flight. We can also arrange for your fish to be processed if you would like to enjoy some while vacationing on Kaua’i.
Where do I go to meet the fishing boat?
Lahela Ocean Adventures is located in slip 109 at Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor on Kauai, Hawaii. Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor is located 2 miles SE of Lihu`e Airport at the corner of Waapa and Niumalu Roads. Departure times are determined according to the time of year when you’re visiting Kauai.
What about motion sickness?
If you have a tendency for motion sickness, there are preventive over-the-counter medications such as Dramamine and Bonine. They work very well when taken the night before your fishing charter and again, an hour before you get on the LAHELA. Once aboard, saltine crackers help if your stomach feels a little queasy.
On a private charter, you may request that the boat return to port. However, on a shared fishing trip, we cannot return to port unless all passengers on board are in agreement.
For reasons of safety and motion sickness, we discourage young children (under the age of 7) and pregnant women from participating on a shared fishing charter. Pregnant women in their 2nd trimester should not be on the ocean in any sea conditions. If you’re in your 3rd trimester, you may not go at all.
What should I bring?
Most of all, dress comfortably. Bring a light jacket or sweatshirt, camera, sun visor or hat, towel, and a pair of white rubber sole shoes. Bring lots of sun screen as the sun is extra hot on Kauai’s waters. Your chances of getting burned are far greater than anywhere else so please take proper precautions to protect yourself. Bring water and anything you wish to snack on. If you’d like to bring beer, it can NOT be in glass bottles.
What’s your cancellation policy?
All fishing, snorkeling and whale watching trips are scheduled according to Kauai’s weather conditions. Should we cancel your trip due to bad weather, you won’t be charged any cancellation fees. Should you cancel your trip less than 14 days before departure (or fail to show up for your trip), your credit card will be charged the full amount as the cost of your charter is non-refundable at that time.
What does it mean to be Coast Guard certified?
Lahela Ocean Adventures is the ONLY Kauai company that satisfies mandatory Coast Guard requirements each year. This means that the LAHELA is thoroughly inspected annually to ensure that all its safety gear is current, all wiring is in place, all switches are operable, and there are no fire hazards (the engine is cleaned and there’s no oil in the bilge). In short, the Coast Guard double checks that everything is in perfect working order to ensure your safety. They also require the crew members to execute “man overboard” and fire drills. And finally, every other year the boat is hauled out of the water for complete inspection inside and out.
